Exterior Painting in Hershey & Central PA

An exterior paint job in Central Pennsylvania has to survive freeze and thaw, humid summers and a lot of rain. Prep is what decides how long it lasts.

How we handle exterior painting

We wash the house first, then scrape loose paint, sand edges smooth, replace failed caulk and prime all bare wood. Rotted trim gets pointed out before we paint over it, not after.

Weather matters here. We paint when air and surface temperatures are above the paint maker's minimum, usually around 50°F for most acrylics, and we avoid days when rain is expected before the paint has cured. In practice the reliable season around Hershey runs from late April into October.

Many older homes in the area were built before 1978 and may have lead paint under the newer layers. We contain paint chips with ground covers and clean up thoroughly at the end of every day.

What happens on the job

Wash
Soft wash or hand wash to remove dirt, mildew and chalking so primer and paint can bond.
Scrape and sand
All loose and peeling paint removed, edges feathered so they don't telegraph through.
Repair and prime
Failed caulk replaced, bare wood primed, problem areas photographed and shown to you.
Paint
Two coats of exterior acrylic on siding and trim, applied by brush, roller or sprayer depending on the surface.

Exterior Painting questions

How much does it cost to paint a house exterior in Pennsylvania?

Exterior painting cost depends mainly on the size and height of the house, the siding material, how much scraping and wood repair is needed, and how many trim details there are. We visit, measure and give you a free written estimate with the prep work spelled out.

How long does exterior paint last in Pennsylvania?

A well-prepped exterior paint job with quality acrylic paint typically lasts about 7 to 10 years on wood siding in Central Pennsylvania. South and west-facing walls fade and wear faster because of sun exposure. Trim and horizontal surfaces usually need attention first.

What is the best time of year to paint a house exterior in Central PA?

Late spring through early fall is best, roughly late April to mid October. Paint needs dry surfaces and temperatures above the manufacturer's minimum, usually around 50°F, both during application and overnight while it cures.

Can you paint aluminum or vinyl siding?

Yes. Aluminum siding is common on Central PA homes and paints well after a thorough wash to remove chalking. Vinyl can also be painted, but the new color should not be much darker than the original, or the siding can warp in summer heat.

Do you fix rotted wood before painting?

We identify rotted trim before painting and show it to you. Small areas can be repaired with epoxy filler. Larger sections need replacement, which we can quote separately or coordinate with a carpenter.
